THE KAMELISH GUIDE
Does camel milk contain lactose?
Yes. Understand the difference between lactose intolerance and milk allergy before choosing camel milk powder.
Camel milk naturally contains lactose. Turning milk into ordinary powder does not, by itself, make it lactose-free. Do not assume that a camel milk product is lactose-free unless its label specifically supports that claim.
What is lactose intolerance?
Lactose is a sugar in milk. The NHS explains that lactose intolerance occurs when the body has difficulty digesting it, often because it does not make enough of the enzyme lactase. Symptoms can include digestive discomfort after consuming lactose-containing foods.
Is camel milk a lactose-free alternative?
Ordinary camel milk powder is not a lactose-free alternative. The amount of lactose in a product and the portion you consume matter, but a general claim that camel milk is gentler does not establish that you will tolerate it. Check the label and discuss persistent symptoms with your GP.
Intolerance is different from allergy
A milk allergy involves an immune response, whereas lactose intolerance concerns digestion. Removing lactose does not remove milk proteins. Do not assume camel milk is safe for a diagnosed milk allergy; ask your clinician or dietitian before changing milk products.
What to check on the pack
- Read the ingredients and allergen information.
- Look for a specific lactose-free statement if that is what you need.
- Check the serving size and preparation instructions.
- Ask the supplier for clarification if the label is unclear.
